We might be heartily tired of hearing about M-PESA, but the fact that it’s in the news and in our faces all the time is precisely why it’s so successful. Fungibility is the killer app here. It must work at the roadside kiosk as well as it does at Mega Plaza. Now they’re paying rent with it.

Meanwhile, it looks like the mobile money frenzy in Nigeria (nearly two dozen licenses now) has cooled somewhat. Is it a good idea to try to live life in Lagos for a week on just mobile money?

Kenyans to pay rent through M-PesaSafaricom is to begin facilitating the collection of rent in Kenya, following the launch of a payment service dubbed Lipa Kodi na M-Pesa. Lipa Kodi na M-Pesa will cost customers KSh6 to pay rent to the value of of KSh5,000 (US$57), while a transaction fee of KSh220 (US$2.50) is charged for a payment of between KSh50,000 (US$572) and KSh70,000 (US$800).
