Internet and media group, Naspers, is launching a Video on Demand (VOD) service next week in Johannesburg.

According to TechCentral, the news began circulating the interwebs following a teaser/invite sent to journalists last week, pictured below.

The invite claims whatever Naspers has got planned is going to be “the most innovative and exciting entertainment service.” It better be because it’ll soon be hogging broadband with VOD big shots, Netflix.

Earlier this year, Netflix revealed its plans to launch in almost every country of the world by the end of 2016, including South Africa. The smart bet is that Naspers which owns MultiChoice, the DStv and GOtv brands, is trying to clamp down on the VOD market before Netflix arrives.

This would be an optimal time for new entrants into the South African broadband market as well as current broadband service providers launching new packages as the country experiences a surge in subscribers.
