MTN

This month sees the number of MTN subscribers decline by 6.9% following the disconnection of 4.5 million unregistered users.

It seems the whole NCC brouhaha left a lasting effect on MTN. After the commission

served the company a fine because they failed to deactivate unregistered SIM cards, the company has apparently decided to comply.

Obviously, this act will have a bad impact on the company’s growth and revenue, but Executive Chairman, Phuthuma Nhleko believes it will secure MTN’s reputation regarding regulatory matters including subscriber registration processes.

The next priority for MTN right now, is how to win back subscribers. They plan to do this through offers and other forms of engagement, so we’ll probably be hearing from them on that matter soon.

Still on the matter, MTN saw a decline in constant currency data revenue by 9.6%. This occurred following a new regulation that requires subscriber permission before service providers can be able to charge out-of-bundle rates after a bundle expires or is exhausted.

While this regulation seems to bad news for MTN, it’s good news for a lot of frustrated subscribers who have lost money because they couldn’t control how their airtime was being used.
