The journey to the finale of the International Space Apps Challenge Nigeria began in Calabar on Thursday the 10th of April, at the iDeaHub Tinapa. Things didn’t get underway in Lagos until the press conference held at the iDeaHub Lagos, on the 11th of April. The hackathon proper didn’t kick of in either city until the following day after their respective press conferences. The Space App Challenge is meant to be a 2-day hacktahon, so things came to a close in Calabar on Saturday the 12th of April, and in Lagos yesterday.

The Teams

Developers were required to go through a list of challenges, brainstorm and then form teams based on those challenges. For challenges, teams had a choice between:

18 teams (made up of groups and individuals) were involved in the Lagos hackathon. Calabar had a total of 12 teams participating. By night of Saturday, 2 of those teams had hacked their way into the finale. They will do battle against the 18 Lagos teams at the Demo and Awards Ceremony holding today at the iDeaHub in Lagos.

How the winners will be chosen

Only 1 of these teams stands to win cash prize of $3000, as overall winner. There will also be prizes for winners in each of the technology partner categories. 4 of the best apps are eligible for submission to NASA. That’s two already from Calabar, and 2 more to be chosen from among the Lagos teams today.
