DevFest Lagos 2018 happened on Saturday and it was HUGE. There were over 2K developers from all over Nigeria in attendance, 24 speakers, over 22 sessions and 2 panels, making it the largest developer gathering this side of the planet yet. DevFest Lagos 2018 covered everything from remote work to building empathy into products and multiple tracks across ML/AI, Flutter, Android, Cloud, Design, Firebase and Accessibility. Still on Google related news, finalists for Google Impact challenge Africa have been announced in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa and voting is now open. You can vote for your favorite finalist by clicking on your country of choice: Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa.

The MasterCard Foundattion has launched a $2 million fund for Africa-based social ventures through its “Scholars” programme, Disrupt Africa reports. The design and delivery of the fund will be led by MasterCard’s institutional partners to ensure local context is maintained and it’ll roll out over the next two years.

Spotify is now available in four new African countries – all in North Africa. Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria join South Africa as the only African nations where the Sweden-based streaming service is officially available.

TQ, a Nigerian edutainment gaming startup launched barely a month ago, surpassed Candy Crush for a few days as the number one game on the Nigeria Google Play Store, thanks in part to promotional efforts from Nigerian rapper and actor, Falz. Well done to the team behind it!

Huawei has announced plans to build a data center, through which it will offer cloud services for all of sub-Saharan Africa, in South Africa,  per TechCentral. Huawei joins Microsoft and Amazon as the third tech giant to announce plans to build a data center in South Africa.

The Zimbabwean government has said its will introduce a biometric register which will digitize the data of its more than 500K civil servants and hopefully uncover nearly 70K irregular employees who could either be ghost or ‘double salaried’ employees. Techzim has more.

Two North African entrepreneurs, Amr Elmeniawy of Egyptian food manufacturer Natura Agro and Souheil Guessoum of Tunisian company ProvenMed, have been selected to join the Endeavor Global Network. They join Elizabeth Rossiello of BitPesa and Etop Ikpe of Cars45 to make up a total of four African entrepreneurs accepted into the Network.

Nigerian bank FCMB has launched a challenge on Passion Incubator’s collaborate.ng platform. It is seeking an innovative payroll management solution for SMEs and MSMEs in order to position them for access to bank financing and government-led capital assistance programs.
