Following a recent investment round of $175 million, Taxify has expanded its operation in South Africa. The ride-hailing company has launched local services in Polokwane and East London. Taxify kicked off operation in Johannesburg in 2016 and now “operates in more cities across South Africa than in any other countries where it has a presence,” per MyBroadband.

Oracle has appointed Andrew Sordam the Vice President for sub-Saharan Africa. Oracle says it is “serious about Africa,” and “having a vice president, based on the continent, heading African operations demonstrates our continued commitment to the continent, partners and our customers.” Sordam is an Oracle veteran with over 20 years working at various leadership roles in the company.

After a very turbulent year, EOH Holdings financial director John King has announced that he is resigning. King has served as the group’s financial director for over 10 years but says he now wants to pursue his passion in property development. According to TechCentral, the South African IT service management reported a full-year loss of R104 million, down from a profit of R1.2 billion in 2017.

The Future is here: Over 500 top young scientists across Africa have gathered in South Africa for the 38th annual Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF). The youngster will be exhibiting their projects with the hope of winning a scholarship to study in Germany sponsored by Siemens, among other prizes.

German non-profit foundation Westerwelle has launched a startup hub Westerwelle Startup Haus in Kigali, Rwanda. The project, which was launched in partnership with Evonik Foundation, could be the first step in a broader plan as the foundation says they’re “currently exploring options” to expand across Africa.

For the first time, Africa will host the 6th International Open Data Conference (IODC). The conference will hold in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2020. IODC is a bi-annual event where advocates of Open Data share, learn and collaborate ways to make data more open and accessible in support of development priorities.

In Nigeria, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), will present six startups to represent the country at this year’s Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX 2018). The event, aimed at showcasing innovation in consumer electronics, is scheduled to hold in Dubai from the 14th to 18th of October.

AfriLabs has admitted 23 new hubs into its network. The organization now has a total of 123 hubs across 34 African countries and has extended its reach to four new countries.

#WomenInTech: Ada Nduka Oyom has joined Interswitch Group to lead Developers Relations. Ada is a Software developer, community manager and a former Google Developers Group (GDG) organizer.

Repping Africa: CcHUB CEO Bosun Tijani tweeted that iSpace Foundation, an innovation hub in Ghana, has won the Diversity and Inclusion Award at Trailblazers, the Google for Entrepreneurs Summit, in New York.

Wendata has also won the Seedstars World competition in Mozambique. The startup, which offers points to users of its platform for participating in surveys, will now progress to the Seedstars Summit in Switzerland to compete for up to $1 million in equity investment and other prizes.

ShelterTech is accepting applications for its $50,000 accelerator in Kenya. The accelerator is aimed at helping companies providing affordable shelter solutions by providing them with funds. Application for the six-month program is open until October 21. Apply here
