Globally, 30% of the food produced is estimated to be lost along the processes in the agricultural supply chain. Food losses and waste amount to nearly US $ 680 billion in industrialized countries and US$ 310 billion in developing countries like Nigeria. These losses are detrimental to the world’s food security if we do not increase our food production by up to 70%, considering that the world’s population is expected to reach 9.1 billion by 2050.

Due to the complexity of the food supply chains,  we are faced with challenges in reducing food wastage and delivering safe, nutritious food that is of high quality. However, this can be solved by optimising food processing procedures, streamlining supply chains, and linking farmers directly to the market, among other things.

To support safe food and fight malnutrition, The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is supporting the Agribusiness Innovation Challenge for early-stage agritech start-ups that are actively contributing to the supply chain efficiency of cassava, maize, rice, and OFSP in Nasarawa with funding and to be implemented by Ventures Park, with the aim of strengthening the Nutrition in Nigeria’s staple foods.
