Hinata Energy, a renewable energy startup that retails biofuel-powered cookstoves has signed an agreement with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to deploy 50,000 single-burner biofuel-powered cookstoves across all federal and state polytechnics in Nigeria.
This agreement comes on the back of a successful partnership with Kaduna Polytechnic to deploy 1,000 units of biofuel-powered cookstoves to their student hostels. The partnership allows NBTE explore the option of using biofuel as a mainstream clean cooking option for students in campus hostel accommodation since it is safer and cheaper.
Commenting on the partnership, Mr Kamal-Deen Kassim, CEO, Hinata Energy said ‘’This collaboration is one that we are very happy with, as our priority is to promote a safe and clean-burning cooking system in communities across Nigeria. And what better place to kickstart this social responsibility goal than the 80 percent of tertiary institutions in Nigeria that have banned the use of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and electric cookstoves due to their potential hazards. These students now have an alternative (our biofuel cook stove) that is cheaper, safer and won’t emit toxic gases that can affect their health, allowing them to focus on what truly matters, their studies.’’
The agreement will save more than 150,000 metric tons of carbon emission(C02) annually thereby protecting the environment. It will also allow income generation for our polytechnic partners through a long-term leasing arrangement for students, as well as funding opportunities in renewable energy research and internship program for students.
‘We are excited about this initiative, as students will now have access to affordable and clean energy in their hostels. This is important because for us, we want to create the most conducive environment for our students, so they can maximize their respective programs. We are looking at a smooth roll out of this as soon as possible’’ said Executive Secretary, NBTE.
About Hinata Energy
Hinata Energy, founded in 2019, is a company borne out of a passion for renewable energy development growth in Nigeria and Africa as a whole, with a current core business in the retailing of biofuel-powered cookstoves and biofuel for cooking.
Hinata’s biofuel cookstove comes in single- and double-burner cookstoves with a stainless-steel body and a 1.2 litres capacity stainless steel pressure-less fuel canister. The cookstove is proven to surpass the World Health Organization (WHO) benchmarks for Particulate Matter PM2.5, International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and International Workshop Agreement (IWA) Tier 4 standards for emissions. The company’s biofuel is a liquid mixture of high and low alcohol. It is colourless, burns blue when lit, and provides fuel for the burner at continuous full power (about 1.5 kW) for approximately 4.25 hours per litre.
