Airtel-backed MVNO in Kenya, Equitel has recorded over 600,000 subscribers in about 6 months of its launch, according to TechMoran.

The MVNO launched last year September in partnership with Nairobi-based financial services provider, Equity Bank and already had 420, 000 subscribers as at March.

Airtel, in an earlier report on TechMoran said “Equitel has in about 6 months of operations grown its MVNO customer base to over 600,000 subscribers, over 70% of these actively using both the mobile and financial services offered by the MVNO.”

The bank’s MVNO partnership with Airtel will drive a new initiative of a paper-thin SIM card that can be affixed on the common SIM cards, converting the handset into a ‘dual’ SIM handset.

Airtel Africa CEO Mr. Christian De Faria commented, “We strongly believe that the entry of the MVNO into the Kenyan market will stimulate and sustain overall market growth through a new range of innovative products and service propositions that will give more choice and value to consumers.”
