Nigerian news sources took their sweet time getting on the web, but it’s 2015, and most of them not only have websites, but mobile apps. In fact, news apps are some of the most downloaded Android apps in Nigeria.

We’ve put together a list of the essential applications from Nigerian newspaper/media houses that can help you keep your finger on the pulse of Nigeria.

Punch Mobile
The Punch
Is a mobile app owned and developed by the Punch Newspapers. Punch mobile comes with a friendly user interface and features news categories on business, politics, health, metro news, education, entertainment, and sports. Users can save articles as favorites to remain on the app for as long as they want. The Punch Mobile app also uses push notifications to push breaking news to mobile devices.

ChannelsTV Mobile
Channels Television, one of Africa’s largest news channels uses its apps to provide live access to its linear TV programming. With an iWitness report functionality in the app, users can share news stories and scoops with Channels TV.

AIT Mobile
The AIT Mobile app indexes news updates, videos, and weather updates from the Nigerian TV station. The app also provides a comprehensive list of AIT programs and a broadcast schedule, that allows users add programs to  device calendar. That way you won’t miss your favorite soap opera or red carpet highlights. The app also has live streaming capabilities.

Sahara Reporters
Sahara Reporters
Popularly known as an online community of international reporters, Sahara Reporters has risen to prominence as an online news source for politics especially controversial political reporting in Nigeria. The platform does not have an official mobile app, an unofficial third party app does seem to get the job done.

This Day Live
ThisDay app gives a direct feed from THISDAY newspaper. It has sections for breaking news, business, sports, life and style, politics, health and wellbeing, backpage and commentaries. Pretty much everything a user will find in the physical newspaper.

The Nation Nigeria
The Nation news app delivers news from the Nation Newspaper. The app also allows readers contribute to the newspaper’s news cycle via a ‘send us your news’ option. News report can be uploaded with videos and photos.

TVC News
TVC News app from the pan-African news channel, TVC television, allow users live stream the station and send in news lead to the TVC newsroom via the “neighbourhood watch” feature.

Nigerian Newspaper App
This app allows users access an aggregated news feed from several newspapers and television stations in Nigeria such as Channels TV, TVC news, AIT, HIP TV, Sahara Reporters, Information Nigeria and couple other popular news channels.

The Amebo app aggregates news from popular Nigerian news websites, and is a great way to stay on top of news from a wide range of sources without having to visit each website or download multiple apps. Amebo supports offline reading, search, social sharing and more features.

News24 Nigeria
The News24 Nigeria app comes with a easy user friendly UI, delivering both local and international news from News24. The app has rich news categories for sport stories, lifestyle, entertainment, politics, business, Africa news, World, and tech articles. It also has weather forecast capabilities.

Naija247news app is the mobile app for Nigeria247news website. The app curates breaking news on business, politics, art and entertrainment, technology, economic and financial report from Nigeria. It allows users send report to the news agency and upload multimedia.
