internet day

There is something to celebrate everyday. Today, it’s internet day, I’m informed. By the internet.

This day, 45 years ago, what we know know as the Internet was an experimental thing called the ARPANET. If you think your internet is slow now, here is something to think about. The first message sent between two computers over the ARPANET on the 29th October, 1969 was the word “login”. But only the letters “L” and “O” made it to the other side.

Fast forward to 2015, and we send unconsciously and constantly send gigabytes of information to ourselves in the cloud. More than 2 billion people are connected to the “grid”, browsing north of 50 billion indexed webpages.

I you’d like to read a concise but great history of the internet (and bonus, the origin of spam), I recommend this one.
