The University of the Witwatersrand is hosting a Student App Challenge at the institute’s’ new Digital Innovation Zone (DIZ) in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

The Student App Challenge is targeted at both students and non-students; from Artists, writers, creators, entrepreneurs, scientists and the likes.

Participants are required to develop apps that will add to the current suite of Wits University’s Mobile Apps for Students, WitsM.

“Wits University has just launched WitsM – a set of mobile Apps to [support some aspects of student life],” said Prof Barry Dwolatzky, Director JCSE at Wits University. “The Student App Challenge is an opportunity for students (and their friends) to come up with ideas for innovative and exciting Apps [that can be added to WitsM],” he added.

The Student App Challenge will run over two weekends, starting with an Ideathon on the 15th and 16 of August, 2015. The hackathon will hold on the 22nd and 23rd of August 2015.

Winners will be announced on the Demo day on the 29th of August, 2015 and will be given full membership of the DIZ co-working space, Apple iPads tablets and lots more.

Developers will have control over their apps after the event as they will be free to reuse it in other tertiary institutions and on app stores.
