Obi Worldphone has exited the Kenyan market due to sales figures not increasing.
This exit has been gradual and a few people saw it coming. First the Kenyan head of operations for Obi Worldphone left and wasn’t replaced. Then the social media accounts of Obi Worldphone’s Kenya branch became inactive in September and users were referred to the global accounts.
No new Obi phone model has been introduced in Kenya since the second half of 2015, and the country is no more listed on Obi Worldphone’s global store locator.
Obi Worldphone, owned by former Apple CEO, John Sculley, launched in Kenya last year and executives were optimistic that the phone would secure at least 5% of the market share in Kenya. Looks like they weren’t prepared for the competitive nature of the Kenyan market.
