A new GSMA report says if mobile operators could close gender gaps in low- and middle-income countries by 2023, this would provide an estimated additional $140 billion in revenue to the mobile industry over the next five years. According to the GSMA’s Mobile Gender Gap Report 2019 (pdf), across low- and middle-income countries, 313 million fewer women than men use mobile internet, representing a gender gap of 23 per cent.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) will invest $6 million in tech companies in Kenya and other African countries, WeeTracker reports. The fund will be disbursed through TIDE Africa, which will also be responsible for identifying fund recipients and fund distribution.

Dayo Koleowo has been promoted to Partner at pre-seed fund Microtraction. Koleowo was previously Principal Investment Officer at Microtraction and former cofounder/CEO of Chowhub, an Abuja-based meal delivery startup.

In Zimbabwe, Econet’s EcoCash and Cassava SmartTech and a third party service provide Dr Dish were involved in some legal drama over a now-terminated contract  between Dr Dish and another Econet subsidiary, Econet Media, According to Techzim, Econet Media and Dr Dish partnered to launch Kwese TV in Zimbabwe in 2018. This deal is the source of dispute between both companies as Dr Dish say its owed money by Econet Media which denies the allegation.

South African telco Cell C has announced that its CEO Jose Dos Santos will be stepping down from his role at the company effective March 1, 2019. The company says an interim CEO will be selected until “such a time when a permanent replacement will be appointed.”

Still on Cell C, the company announced that The Buffet Consortium will be joining the company’s board as a minority shareholder. According to the statement, “with Buffet support the Cell C balance sheet will be bolstered and ensure Cell C’s sustainable growth for the future.”
