We are showing the next generation of girls and women that careers in tech are possible and there is space for them in the industry. MTN Group has announced it will launch an instant messaging (IM) service akin to China’s WeChat and Facebook’s WhatsApp as it seeks to expand revenue from digital services and mobile money. Group CEO Rob Shuter calls it, “WeChat of Africa”. The app will be launched in MTN markets in West Africa first, as part of a “beta-testing” phase. But the telco plans to introduce it to all the countries in which it operates.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Visa has launched the Visa Everywhere Initiative: Women’s Global Edition. Women entrepreneurs from around the world have the chance to tackle fintech and social impact challenges for a chance to win $100,000 in each of the two challenges. The program will culminate with a finals event to be held during kick-off of the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019. For more information and participation details, visit the event website here.

Ride hailing company, Taxify, has re-branded to Bolt and has unveiled its new logo. “While we’ve made progress on our mission, we’ve also started to outgrow parts of our brand, including the name,” CEO and Co-Founder, Markus Villig, said adding that the new name stands for the fast and effortless movement  the company’s services provide. The Estonian-born tech company now serves 25 million customers in over 30 countries globally and has grown to be a leader in Europe and Africa.

The 2019 Orange Social Venture Prize is offering three of the best innovative and socially responsible tech startups in Africa and the Middle East a grand total of €50,000 in prize money. In addition, winners will be provided with support for six months from business and telecoms professionals. Applications are open till May 4, 2019 and you can click here to learn more and to apply.

Digital innovators based in Botswana, Cameroon, Chad, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda can now apply for Class 5 of the eFounders Fellowship. The fellowship is an initiative of the Alibaba Business School and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad). The programme provides participants with first-hand exposure to ecommerce and digital innovations, access to business leaders across Alibaba and China, as well as an opportunity to connect with like-minded leading entrepreneurs from their regions.
