Tech Women Lagos Opening Weekend [Video Highlights]

The Tech Women Lagos AUDACITY exhibition continues this weekend, March 23 and 24. The physical exhibition comprises portraits, audio and visual components of the Tech Women Lagos portrait series which we launched on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2019.

Tech Women Lagos profiles 50 women in Lagos’ technology ecosystem from different backgrounds and at different stages of their tech careers. We are showing the next generation of girls and women that careers in tech are possible and there is space for them in the industry.

There’s also a line-up of activities targeted at young girls and women as part of the Tech Women Lagos event series. Here they are below:

Farmcrowdy has secured an additional US$1 million in seed funding.  Cox Enterprises, Techstars and local investor Ajayi Solutions, participated in the investment round. The digital farming platform had secured the same amount in a funding round in 2017. The platform, which allows individuals invest in agriculture, will use the investment to expand its operation in Nigeria.

One Finance Limited (OneFi) has acquired MEST-backed payments platform, Amplify. In three years, Amplify has risen to become one of Nigeria’s leading online payment processors, supporting over 1,000 merchants and facilitating digital transactions for four of the country’s largest banks. The acquisition is MEST’s 5th exit in their 11-year history. The deal, which was concluded at the beginning of the month, was sealed at an undisclosed fee.

According to new data from the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), the average price of a gigabyte (GB) of data isn’t going down in this part of the world (Africa) in comparison with other regions. A4AI, a project of the World Wide Web Foundation, advocates for the right to affordable access to the internet for all.

Telkom is laying a fibre loop to connect Mombasa to Telkom’s over 10,000-kilometer of the national backbone. The initiative is aimed at improving connectivity and enhance quality of service to customers. Telkom plans to multiply the initiative across large cities in Kenya to support businesses, homes and individuals.

The GSM Association has set up a body to deal with fraud and security issues in Africa’s telecoms industry. Orange, MTN, Airtel and Vodafone/Vodacom are part of the inaugural members of the Association Africa Fraud and Security Group (AFASG). Angolan mobile phone company, Unitel, chairs the group.
