The South African government and regulatory agency, National Energy Regulator (NERSA), are preventing farmers from powering their farms using solar energy, a news report says. These solar energy alternatives can save farmers thousands of rand in electricity cost as well as ameliorate the now frequent organised power cuts or load shedding by channeling excess energy to the national grid. According to MyBroadBand, NERSA has to grant permission for independent power generation and this can take months, a year or more to obtain. NERSA is pushing blames to the Department of Energy for lack of guidance in the formation of guiding regulations. For farmers who have invested in solar farms, this delay is costly and clearly not a win-win for any of the parties involved. South Africa’s power utility company, Eskom, has resorted to load shedding in the past to meet power demands amidst its own internal crisis from staggering debts to falling revenues and crumbling infrastructure.
