Seedstars World is a global competition where startups from Africa, Asia, Australia, South America and Europe compete against each other on an international stage. Seedstars World 2014 involved 30 startup scenes from around the world, including 8 regions in Africa. Each region submits one finalist who gets a shot at a grand prize of $500,000 in equity investment.
For the Nigerian regional rounds, after presentations and pitches from about 20 pre-selected startups, including EasyAppetite, Green Energy, Ideacentric, Yellow Navigation, CribPark, Asuqu, Cube, 500 Shops and Crea8tive image, competing for a chance to represent Nigeria at the finale, the top 3 winning start-ups were selected.
Coming in first place was Green Energy, which converts plastic waste into petroleum, 2nd place: Ideacentric lead by Silas Okwoche, which featured its Nerve phone, UI and apps that were created especially for the African market and in third place was 500shops.
Green Energy will go on to Geneva, Switzerland in February for the 4-day bootcamp and Seedstars World Final Event. Choji Bare, Green Energy’s Founder stated: “This win has left me speechless. There was some very good competition today and the win means a lot for the future of Green Energy.”
Seedstars World Lagos 2014 was hosted at the CcHub on the 13th of June, 2014. OkHI, a startup that wants to solve the lack of physical address system in Kenya’ and beyond has emerged the best at SeedStars World Nairobi, while the South African leg of the SeedStars World (SSW) competition is scheduled for July 10, 2014 in Cape Town, South Africa. Last year, SimplePay, emerged the Nigerian Regional Winner and 2nd place Global Winner.
