Looks like it’s great times a head for internet in Nigeria. MTN Group is reportedly partnering with Alcatel-Lucent to launch a 100 GBps fibre-optic network in Nigeria.
The network will build on MTN’s existing 10 GBps infrastructure which the company claims covers over 90% of Nigeria’s land mass. It is unclear if MTN will make the network available on a “direct to end user” basis, or as a wholesale offering to other providers in the region, similar to what Main One and Globacom (GLO-1) already offer. Should it be the later, the service appears to pale in comparison to GLO-1, which is reportedly advertised to have a minimum capacity of ~300 GBps.
MTN is currently Nigeria’s largest telecommunications provider, with over 40% (58 million) of the total subscriber base.
