The reemergence was without fanfare as there’s no official statement indicating its release. Initially launched in 2009, Facebook lite is a light-weight version of Facebook for areas with limited internet connectivity.
At just 252 kilobytes in size, this scaled down version of Facebook is available in Nigeria, Bangladesh, Nepal, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
The app is built for low end android devices and has been downloaded over 10,000 times since its latest release.
The relaunching of Facebook lite gives an indication that Facebook is up to something. It may be an indication that Facebook’s internet.org project might not get on board fast enough, so having a data efficient Facebook platform should hold the fort.
