Kenyan mobile telecom operator, Safaricom, is about to launch a video-on-demand (VOD) service that will be powered by an Android-based set-top box, Dignited reports.

Although details of the product remained fuzzy for a while, earlier speculations have been confirmed. A report on TechWeek says that the decoders (aka “The Box”) are already in Kenya and will likely have a 4G SIM slot, HD resolution, can be used for gaming and also use an external WIFI and be used as a wireless hotspot.

Before the emergence of Safaricom into the TV business, Zuku was the only dual internet and TV provider. Deductively, this may be a threat to Zuku’s market share in the demographics of people that want television and internet bundled together.

Although saturated, the terrestrial television space could still do with more providers because in this battle for content distribution, the final arbiter will be the consumers coupled with the laws of demand and supply.
