The communication service provider, Gilat Satcom, has announced “Village Island“, an offering that will enable rural/low-income villages in Africa have internet connectivity at $1 a month.

The offering is designed to provide internet, VoIP and IP video over a private satellite network comprising of NGOs, Cellular and telephone operators and others.

According to Gilat Satcom, the Village Island will be launched at the Innovation Access Digital Africa summit to hold in April 14-16 at the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Eran Yoran, Director Marketing & Business Development of Gilat Satcom stated that, “Providing affordable access in Africa is an ongoing theme for the telecoms industry. We have worked for a long time to provide a solution which is both affordable for the village end-user and profitable for the entire supply chain.”

Yoran is upbeat about the product. “Village Island is economically self-sustaining and scalable so it can grow with demand and with a minimal additional investment.”
