Twitter has announced the expansion of its direct messaging service to enable users send and receive direct messages without necessarily following each other.
The prior experience of Twitter users while sending direct messages required that they follow each other on the platform, but with the new feature users can now send dms to any individual on Twitter as long as the recipient has the new direct messaging feature active.
To activate this feature, you are required to go through your account setting and accept to receive direct messages from anyone. The new feature also allows you reply any user you receive a direct message from without having to follow back. The desire to receive direct messages from random users is dependent on the account holders choice to either allow such or maintain the prior status quo.
Users can easily identify twitter accounts with the open DM feature, as the direct message icon will be on the user’s profile page.
Twitter had previously released this feature in 2013 before backtracking on it.
The new feature is available on Android and iOS devices.
