Now that Netflix is here, there are going to be questions asked about it. Heck, there are already questions being asked about it. So, we decided to make a list of questions you’ll most likely have about using Netflix in Nigeria and other African countries.

Here they are.

1. What is VPN and what does it have to do with Netflix [and chilling]?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a mechanism that allows you access private networks and share data remotely through public networks.

Before Netflix went global (barring China, N. Korea, Crimea and Syria), people were using VPNs to unblock Netflix and watch it in countries where it wasn’t available.

Even now that Netflix is available in 130 more countries around the world, some shows still won’t air here. This is because licensing deals differ from one market (read: country) to another. So, by purchasing a VPN, you can gain access to those shows that normally won’t be available in your country.

2. What do I do when someone is using my Netflix account without my permission?

Run out of your house, into the streets, and start screaming.

Because, let’s face it. Somebody will do this. They will be covetous, or sneaky, they will try to steal your details, and you will wonder who the demon is.

This is what Netflix advises you to do:

Sign out of all the devices connected to your account. This may take up to 8 hours to take effect. But if you know the person [or you suspect someone] quickly go and beg them to stop. Especially if you are on the Basic plan that doesn’t allow you stream on more than one device at a time.

After that, change your password. If you like, don’t use a strong password, someone will hack it again and I will laugh at you, in spirit of course.

3. How do I set parental controls on my Netflix account?

I’m pretty sure you won’t want to find your 10-year old son watching Orange is the New Black or revisiting ‘special’ scenes from Jessica Jones. If you don’t mind that, then clap for yourself.

To change the parental control setting in your account, you have to do it from a computer. Go to Parental Controls under Manage Profile and make the changes.

4. Can I watch Netflix shows offline?

No. It’s Netflix, not YouTube or Vimeo.

Since Netflix is a streaming service, the movies and TV shows are only streaming over the internet, they are not being downloaded. So if NEPA (PHCN) decide to interrupt your power supply at the time, or your WiFi goes off while you’re streaming, you can’t “proceed further.”

5. Why can’t I stream Netflix in HD?

You can only stream in HD if you’re subscribed to the Standard and Premium plans. Basic plan doesn’t allow HD streaming.

6. What if I’m travelling or relocating, how does this affect my Netflix account?

If you’re travelling to another country or relocating, as long as Netflix is available there, you’re fine. But take note of the following:

  • The monthly price, billing currency and available methods of payment may not be the same.
  • Netflix will continue to bill you in the currency of the country you signed up in

If you wish to be billed in the currency of the country you moved to, just cancel your account, wait until the remainder of the month is over, and then restart your account in your new country.

7. Can I watch Netflix shows while I’m travelling?

Yes you can. As long as you are connected to stable WiFi. If there are any differences you need to take note of, Netflix will notify you immediately.

8. How many devices can stream Netflix at the same time?

This depends on the plan you’re subscribed to. If you’re subscribed to the Basic plan, you can stream on only one device at a time but you can connect multiple devices to your account.

On the Standard plan, you can stream on two devices at a time, and with the Premium plan, you can stream on up to four devices at a time.

9. How do I cancel my Netflix subscription?

All you need to do is click ‘Cancel Membership’ on your account page. Peradventure you change your mind, just restart your account from your account page.

10. With what devices can I connect to Netflix?

As long as your computer, gaming console, DVD or Blu Ray player, HDTV, set-top box, home theater system, phone or tablet are connected to the internet, you can watch Netflix on it.

11. How do I change my Netflix plan?

To change your Netflix streaming, go to your account page and select ‘Change Plan’ to view the available streaming plans. Then make your choice.

12. What are some of the best and most highly-rated shows on Netflix?

Okay. I’ll be honest, this wasn’t part of the plan. I just couldn’t resist throwing in some suggestions. So in the spirit of ‘Netflix-mania’, here are some shows you should definitely check out, if you haven’t already:

  • House of Cards (3 seasons)
  • Making a Murder (1 season)
  • 30 Rock (7 seasons)
  • Daredevil (1 season)
  • Orange is the New Black (3 seasons)
  • Breaking Bad (5 seasons)
