One of the most needed features for Twitter’s mobile apps may be on the verge of arriving. Twitter is noisy, a constant stream of [annoying] information, comments and long-winded hashtags and arguments – much like a market place and it is undoubtedly exhausting.

Worst part, it is not like Facebook, so you can’t “hide” the tweets from those you follow without unfollowing or blocking them which in Nigerian twitter is well, bad for you.

But according to The Verge, Twitter users have noticed a new “mute” button on the iOS and Android version of the apps, a way to (finally!) hush the accounts of users you follow but don’t want to see in your Timeline, and the muted accounts will not know.

The notion of muting on Twitter isn’t new. 3rd party apps like TweetDeck (later acquired by Twitter in 2011), Ubersocial, Tweetcaster and Tweetbot, have always offered the functionality to mute accounts and keywords.

Although I haven’t noticed the feature on my phone, I know that it is not unusual for Twitter to unobtrusively test new features and updates with a small, random pool of users before rolling it out to a larger user base, which might explain why the button has not been noticed by everyone.

Earlier this year, Twitter tested a major profile page overhaul that has now been rolled out to all users.
