Good news for our Muslim readers. Ramadan starts this Saturday. Even greater news, you don’t have to give up Twitter.
Starting this Saturday the 28th of June, billions of Muslims around the world will join in a month-long commemoration the holy 9th month of Ramadan. This usually entails fasting and temporarily giving up other pleasures of life including, of course, Twitter. However, Twitter has undergone some changes to give it’s Muslim users enough reasons not to give up Twitter this Ramadan.
First, they’ve created custom hashtag icons. If you use either of #Ramadan or #Eid hashtag in your Ramadan-related Tweets (in English or Arabic), the special icons will appear, reminding your followers of the special month.

The icons won’t display in embedded tweets. You can click on the dates in the tweets above to see how they render on Twitter.
Twitter will also tell you when it’s time to start or break your fast. Starting tomorrow, just Tweet @AlArabiya beginning with #iftar and followed by your city name hashtagged (e.g #Lagos) and you will get a breakfast reminder. For reminders on when to begin your fast, replace #iftar with #lmask.
