Vehicle classifieds space, Carmudi has informed TechCabal that the its marketplace has achieved 10,000 listings in six months of operations. The Rocket Internet portfolio company claims to attract over 62,000 page views a month.

On further inquiry, a spokesperson for Carmudi revealed that over 600 cars have been sold via the site till date. The site got off the ground by listing individual sellers — “those guys that have buy me stickers on their cars”, according to the spokesperson.

That breaks down to about 100 cars a month, and 3 cars a day for the past six months. Not sure if this a high or low number, TechCabal has reached out to Carmudi’s largest competition, Cheki, to get a sense of what obtains in their space. The three year old website which has counterparts in nine other African countries has over 20,000 vehicles listed on their Nigerian platform. We are still awaiting detailed comment from them.

“Currently, we are more focused on dealers”, the Carmudi spokesperson said. “Its a bit of a challenge to estimate how much they sell per day because most of them don’t release exact figures when we call or visit them but they all agree to be getting calls from the site”.

Predictably, a lot of the interest in Carmudi comes from Lagos. Most of the the startup’s marketing happens online to its 168,000 strong audience on Facebook, but they are looking to expand its operations offline, on a state by state basis.
