Africa’s foremost and largest Mobile Money platform, M-Pesa, in partnership with Vodafone, on Monday extended their SMS-based service to Europe – Romania specifically.

The launch targets about 7 million users in Romania who depend mainly on cash rather than cards. With M-Pesa, they will be able to pay for goods, settle bills and withdraw and deposit cash via authorised agents, with a daily transfer limit between 1  and 30,000 Romanian Leu ($9,200).

M-Pesa began operations in Kenya in 2007 and has since grown to over 16.8 million active customers in emerging markets, handling nearly half of Kenya’s GDP alone.
