Self-driving cars have the latency to make the roads much safer, thanks to the built-in sensors that allow a computer make driving decisions much faster than humans. And while there are challenges ahead, the potential seems large. Google has unveiled its self-driving car model and now, Intel is getting in on the automated vehicle industry too.

Intel is introducing what it calls an “in-vehicle solutions platform,” which is ultimately aimed at supporting self-driving vehicles like the Google car, to help the car “evolve to better inform, assist and eventually assume control,” according to a press release. Part of Intel’s support is the infotainment system — equipped with processors, an operating system and developer kits — which makes it easier for automakers and suppliers to bring updates to its platform much faster (in only 12 months) and at 50% of the cost.

Intel said it is actively gathering data about how people drive and how cars can be more adaptive and predictive; and how they interact with drivers and their surroundings. In 2012, Intel initiated the $100 million Intel Capital Connected Car Fund to grow car-tech integration and help enable future independent driving capabilities.
