World Cup 2014 is finally over and Germany have emerged deserved winners.
No doubt, Twitter played a huge role in the conversation leading up to the final. Germany’s 7-1 victory in the semi-finals over hosts Brazil broke a couple of footballing records, including a Twitter record for the most live-tweeted sports game ever – 35.6 million. It was only inevitable that the World Cup final would break one or two records.
According to Twitter, Germany’s victory over Argentina generated 32.1 million tweets to become the second biggest live-tweeted game ever. That’s a whole 7 million more than Super Bowl XLVIII generated. To think the Super Bowl was relegated to second biggest only barely a week ago.
The Germany/Argentina game also broke the Twitter record for the most tweets per minute for an event. At the final whistle, the number of tweets sent out peaked to 618,725 per minute.
And tweeting was not restricted to only those watching the game.
There was even a “Chancellerian” selfie
