The global telecom, Alcatel-Lucent has inked an agreement with Algerian Ministry of Post, Information technology and Communication to construct an Orval undersea cable system to run more than 560 km fiber-optics linking Oran in Algeria to Valencia, Spain.
“The Orval network represents a strategic technology investment that will strengthen access to high-quality network services. Based on Alcatel-Lucent’s technology and expertise, Orval will give us an edge to continue developing our service offer to an increasing number of broadband users,” Abdelhak Benkrid, General Secretary of the ministry said in a media release.
As noted in the release, the 100 gigabit-per-second system will boost broadband service to an projected population of 42 million users in both countries. Alcatel-Lucent will be in charge of designing and manufacturing the system in joint effort with other IT Marine operators while the project is due for completion in 2016.
The project is also running as part of the Orsec plan slated by the Algerian ministry to reinforce the county’s ability to withstand natural disaster as opposed past experiences.
