University of Witwaterstrand has announced winners for its Student App Challenge, according to Disrupt Africa.

As reported by Techcabal last month, the challenge targets both students and non- students who can come up with student-relative apps which would be added to the University’s mobile apps for students catalog, WitsM.  All the developers were given five minutes to pitch their ideas in front of a panel who followed up with questions.

The top three winners were Gig Guide – an event listing platform that notifies users of upcoming events based on their interests; I’m interested – an app that connects students having similar interests, and Wits Locate – an app that helps determine the location of students when they load pictures, and also has a direction feature.

Winners in other categories includes Witsmealapp (Most innovative ideas award), IQMates (Ready for market award), and Bus Control (Most Required Idea Award). Need A Book, 24 and Wits Happening were also acknowledged for their presentations.

The overall winners were given an Apple iPad Air, and membership to the Wits Digital Innovation Zone.
