Carlyle Group has announced it has agreed to invest $40 million in online travel agency, Wakanow. Equity came from Carlyle’s Sub-Saharan Africa fund (CSSAF). “We are excited to partner with Carlyle as we continue to grow and expand in Africa and beyond,” Obinna Ekezie, Co-Founder and CEO said, adding that the investment will help Wakanow “further develop our offerings and broaden our customer base.” The CSSAFund was founded in 2012  and has invested over $550 million across a variety of industries across Africa till date.

Kenyan AI-powered Collaborative Database for Lion Identification and Inter-Organizational Research, LINC, has been selected to receive Microsoft’s AI for Earth Innovation Grant. LINC is among 11 recipients selected from a pool of 200 to receive grant offers between $45,000 and $200,000 to support projects, as well as Microsoft Azure and AI tools and affiliations with the National Geographic Society Labs. The grant supports research on global issues such as climate, agriculture, water and biodiversity conservation.

Is Naspers on a roll? Maybe. Naspers said on Thursday that it will invest $660-million in Swiggy, India’s largest food delivery platform just days after leading a US$540-million funding round in Indian online education start-up Byju. Swiggy has doubled its gross merchandise value in the past six months as it “continues to unlock the tremendous potential in Indian food delivery”, Naspers said about the move.

Zimbabwe’s Cabinet has approved a ‘Principles of the Cyber Protection, Data Protection, and Electronic Transactions Bill’. This is to help citizens clarify what is and isn’t a cybercrime especially with more businesses and individuals going digital. Civil society groups are already poking holes in the bill, but these will all be debated when the bill goes to parliament before it is signed into law.

Ghanaians will soon be able to access their National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) policy using their mobile handset devices come 2019 courtesy a new NHIS Mobile Renewal and Digital Authentication policy. The policy is set to be launched in the first quarter of 2019 by President Nana Akufo Addo.
