ANALYTICS

The research company, Briter Bridges has launched a data platform, ‘Briter Intelligence’, a resource for visual, granular and current data on startup activities in African tech.

TechCabal’s Alexander Onukwue writes: “Briter Intelligence isn’t the first attempt to aggregate startup data about Africa. A number of platforms exist for this purpose run by everyone from non-profits to Silicon Valley media companies.”

“However, Giuliani describes his new service as offering an experience that combines the informative value of, say,
Crunchbase with the aesthetics of data analytics software Tableau.”

MY LIFE IN TECH

The subject of this week’s “My Life In Tech” is Delali Attiogbe Attipoe. Delali leads operations at 54gene, a pan African biotech company with operations in Nigeria and the US.

In this installment, she explains her journey into biotechnology and what steering the ship at 54gene looks like.

Here’s an excerpt from Kay’s article:
“Attipoe, who is originally from Ghana, was born in the US and grew up in Kansas. But she’s also well travelled, spending significant amounts of her childhood in Canada as well as living in Kuwait just after the first Gulf War.”

ECONOMY

According to Nedbank economist, Busisiwe Radebe, South Africa’s economy will take at least three years to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the national lockdown.

The first sign of the economic effects of COVID-19 is that big jobs are being cut. According to MyBroadBand, “the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) opened its offices across the country on Monday 18 May, and immediately experienced a big influx of people who lost their jobs.”

“There has also been an uptick in large businesses retrenching staff on the back of the lockdown and COVID-19 pandemic.”

Despite the news of job losses, Alexander Onukwue says that there are signs that activity is beginning to pick up.

Here’s a useful excerpt: “In the last week of April, the Cyril Ramaphosa government
eased restrictions by stepping down the lockdown from Level 5 to 4. It was the beginning of a “phased and gradual return to economic activity,” the president said on April 30.

The consequence, according to Yoco’s data, is a gradual uptick in sales for small businesses.”

That’s all we’ve got.

See you tomorrow.
