Mega infrastructure projects today are nothing short of remarkable. Around the world, infrastructure development continues to push the boundaries of what was once considered impossible, thereby redefining our built environment. Massive structures are built in some of the most challenging ground conditions and tunnels are built underwater. These are achievements that would have seemed unrealistic not long ago.

But as these projects become more impressive, they also become more complex. Delivering a single major infrastructure project involves large amounts of data such as drawings and their revisions, client and technical requirements, engineering designs, and construction documentation reports.

This is where Abideen Sobanke comes in.

Meet Abideen; a senior data scientist who specialises in building computer vision and generative AI solutions for the built environment. With a background in civil engineering, he combines technology expertise with real-world engineering experience to drive impactful digital innovation. Early in his career, he worked across telecommunications infrastructure development, structural consultancy, and construction, gaining first-hand exposure to how large projects are actually delivered. Today, his work focuses on using data-driven solutions to improve performance, sustainability, and project outcomes at scale.

Abideen works in a top global AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) Consultancy firm where he applies artificial intelligence to some of the world’s largest infrastructure projects, building systems that help engineers make sense of enormous volumes of technical information and make informed decisions more effectively.

Recently, he worked on an AI-powered toolbox for design assurance on large scale infrastructure project and programme, helping the project teams reduce inefficiencies and mitigate design flaws while achieving alignment on the most important engineering deliverables; engineering drawings. This improved design assurance processes, reduced human error, and allowed engineers to focus on higher-value work while improving overall project efficiency. This solution impact was recognised at Digital Enabled Excellence Awards 2026, where it was awarded the runner-up position in the Innovation in Artificial Intelligence category.

Based on the large scale engineering project’s requirements, he also developed an intelligent retrieval system that helps engineers provide real-time answers to technical questions from an ever growing pool of project, client and technical documentation, making compliance checks faster,  and saving significant time searching for the right clauses or interpretation. This has significantly democratised knowledge between project teams and experience levels.

His work is rooted into digital delivery on major projects across the globe, solving one of the most complex aspects of systems engineering; requirements engineering, contributing to the development of REALM, an AI-powered system designed to clarify and extract and categorise projects and client requirements, reduce ambiguity and make sense of vast and often fragmented documents that defines project deliverables.

These innovations delivered significant measurable benefits, including cost savings  and improved efficiency across design processes, leading to Abideen winning the digital rising star award in 2025.

What makes Abideen’s work particularly impactful is its practicality. Rather than focusing on futuristic concepts, he builds solutions that address real challenges faced by engineers today. The aim is not to replace engineering expertise, but to support it with intelligent systems that can process far more information than any individual team could manage alone.

As infrastructure projects continue to grow in size and complexity, this kind of integration between engineering and data science is becoming increasingly essential. The future of construction will not be defined solely by stronger materials or bigger machines, but by Engineers who learn to build with data fluently as they build with steel, timber or fibre-reinforced concrete.

From rapidly expanding cities in Africa to mega-projects across Europe, America, and the Middle East, infrastructure is entering an intelligence-driven era. Engineers who can combine traditional technical knowledge with data-driven tools will play a central role in shaping how societies grow and function in the decades ahead.

Abideen Sobanke represents this new generation of engineers who understand both the physical and digital dimensions of infrastructure. By embedding artificial intelligence into the core of project delivery, he helps ensure tomorrow’s remarkable projects are not only possible, but also safer, cost-effective, and more resilient.
