Lagos-based renewable energy provider, Arnergy Solar, has secured funding from Nigeria’s Bank of Industry to provide off-grid solar systems for rural communities in Nigeria.
The project which is in partnership with the United Nations Development Program will see Arnergy, in this pilot project, install solar grids in six Nigerian communities in Anambra, Delta, Gombe, Kaduna, Niger and Osun States.
“We want our rural communities to take control of their energy generation and to pay only for the energy they use,” Rasheed Olaoluwa, CEO, Bank of Industry. “Our medium-term vision is to have 100,000 homes installed with solar systems in the next 5 years, through a combination of micro-grid and stand-alone solar home systems. This partnership with Arnergy is targeted at poverty alleviation and rural economic development,” he added
The company proposes to reach an average of 200 homes within each community while it will also provide a model of delivering solar power to rural communities commercially.
The BOI had previously revealed that the off-grid solar home systems partnership with the United Nations Development Programme will last for a minimum of 25 years.
Arnergy Solar was selected from eight companies that responded to the Bank of Industry’s call for proposal made in 2014.
