Egypt, Nigeria, and Kenya were the top African countries that declined further on the freedom of Internet ranking, per a new report from Freedom House. The report examined the state of Internet freedom and accessibility in 87 countries across the world. Check out the full report here.

Apart from being ranked by digital advocates as the world’s worst abuser of internet freedom, China is becoming more brazen in exporting some of those techniques abroad including in Africa, writes Abdi Latif Dahir, for Quartz Africa. Remember earlier this year, reports showed that Beijing bugged the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa—which it helped build—and transferred data for more than five years.

A year and three months after it hit a ₦1 billion in monthly transaction value milestone, Nigerian payments startup Paystack has now hit the ₦10 billion in monthly transaction value, per this blog post. That’s ~$27.5 million in payments monthly to Paystack merchants. This figure doesn’t include the transaction value Paystack processes in global currencies, and doesn’t reflect what it process through transfers. Congrats to the team!

Nigeria’s Interswitch has partnered with Microsoft to launch a blockchain platform which it says “will help in streamlining the internal processes in the corporates and banks which amount to the lag time responsible for the delay in processing financial instruments.”

Its been 10 years since Kenyan startup Ushahidi was founded. Since then, it has been used more than 150,000 times in over 160 countries, crowdsourcing more than 50 million reports from citizens all over the world, per this blog post.
