The Kenyan government has announced a compulsory 6-month ICT training programme for its police force, according to Fred Matiang’i, the country’s Interior Cabinet Secretary. Techpoint reports that the directive has been put in place so officer have the skills to use a newly launched National Police Service Information Management System (IMS), which is expected to play a key role in the government’s ongoing reforms of the police force. The monster fueling these reforms have been Kenya’s long history of corruption which has taken many forms over the years.

Safaricom’s loan product, Fuliza, has gone live following approval from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). M-PESA users will be able to access the service through a USSD code and CBA Bank is Fuliza’s funding partner. Unlike short loan services like M-Shwari that have a fixed monthly facility fee based on the amount borrowed, Fuliza will charge a facility fee of 0.5% per day on the outstanding balance.

Uganda-based SolarNow, which sells and finances solar home systems, has raised $9 million in debt funding, according to Digest Africa. The funding was led by SunFunder with participation from responsAbility and Oikocredit. This raise comes 3 months after SolarNow raised a $740K grant from the Mastercard Foundation Fund for Rural Prosperity and will go into scaling SolarNow’s services across Uganda.
