The city of Alexandria in Egypt has concluded a 3-month pilot of using an electric bus for public transport. The head of the General Authority for Passenger Transport in Alexandria, has said that the Military Technical College and the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Defence are studying the results of the pilot and they will be made known once ready. The electric bus was introduced in 2018 after Egypt’s Passengers Transportation Authority signed a deal with a Chinese automobile manufacturer, BYD.

Fintech startup, Cellulant, lost six employees in the Nairobi terrorist attack on Jan 15 2019. Cellulant said the six had “put their lives on the line in a true act of leadership, selflessness, and bravery to save the lives of their fellow colleagues.” There’s more here.

According to the Guardian Nigeria, Nigeria’s telecommunications sector ended year 2018 with 172 million subscribers, with teledensity rising to 123.4 per cent from 105 per cent in January 2018. (By subscribers, they probably meant subscriptions. We can’t have more subscribers than the actual number of people in the country).They also report that broadband penetration in Nigeria rose from 30.9 per cent in November to 31.5 per cent as at December 31.

Hacktivist group, Anonymous has come out and said they have taken down some government websites in response to the recent crisis in Zimbabwe. Techzim reports that these sites have always been shaky and it has been difficult to confirm if the sites were indeed taken down since some people could still access some of the sites that were allegedly hacked.

Techpoint reports that The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved $32.5 million for equity investment in Climate Investor One’s Construction Equity Fund (CEF). The fund will provide capital, technical assistance for viable energy projects in Africa and help them go to market.
