Nigerian fintech startup TeamApt has raised $5.5million in Series A funding, almost four years after launch. The company was bootstrapped until this funding round led by a Lagos based investment firm Quantum Capital Partners. TeamApt has plans to build more business and consumer-facing products with the new funds and is also looking to expand to markets in Canada and some parts of Europe.

Google is deploying some of its resources to train political parties, journalists and editors in South Africa on how to spot and fight fake news ahead of the country’s general election on the 8th of May, 2019. Google will have up to nine staff working on their programme in the run-up to the election.

South African data analytics startup Aerobotics announced that it has received R29million (~$2million) from local venture capital (VC) company Paper Plane Ventures in its latest round of funding. Aerobotics’ software products help farmers with artificial intelligence to scout and find areas of their farms that are underperforming because of pests or other problems.

Truphone has partnered with Rain to launch eSIM support in South Africa reports hypertext. An eSIM is an electronic SIM that doesn’t require a user to purchase a tiny plastic chip, instead, they have a SIM provisioned remotely on their device. The iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max sport dual SIM functionality with the secondary SIM being an eSIM.

According to ITNewsAfrica, on the 27th February 2019, OneWeb, a UK based global communications company, sent its first six initial satellites into low-earth orbit, one of which is expected to provide broadband internet to remote schools in Rwanda. The rocket that had the six satellites was launched at the Atlantic coast of the French Guiana space centre, a spaceport mostly used by the European Union.

The Mastercard Foundation in its recent report titled, ‘Digital Commerce and Youth Employment in Africa’, claims that eCommerce in Africa will generate more than US$500 billion a year by 2030 and this will be about 16.7% of the continent’s economy by then. The report also predicts that the growth in the eCommerce space in the continent will affect the livelihoods of up to 80 million new workers.

Digital health entrepreneurs currently using digital technologies to advance access to quality healthcare services in Nigeria are being called on to pitch at a summit organised by Premier Medical Systems (PMS) and supported by PharmAccess Foundation and Digital Health Nigeria. The summit will take place in Lagos this month. The digital intervention adjudged to have the most impact will be presented with a cash prize. Interested persons can apply here.

Eskom, the South African power company, announced that there’s a possibility that the utility will be implementing load shedding from 2 pm on Thursday until the end of the weekend. The company blamed a “shortage of generation capacity” for the situation.
