Microsoft is planning to open an engineering office in Lagos to build Mixed Reality and Artificial Intelligence, according to a tweet by Alex Kipman, Microsoft Technical Fellow and the co-creator of HoloLens. The company is also hiring software engineers, you can apply here.

Nigerian retail lending startup, Paylater has secured a $5 million debt facility and has plans to transition to a full-service digital bank. The debt facility was provided by Nairobi-based Lendable, a technology-enabled funding provider to African consumer and small business lenders. Paylater is a unit of OneFi which started in 2011 as One Credit.

Google announced the establishment of 18 new Womenwill chapters in Southern Africa. Womenwill is an initiative that helps women build their digital skill set by providing training and events for women to attend. The addition of these 18 new chapters of the Womenwill initiative means there are now 25 chapters across Africa.

Ventureburn has published a list of startup events in Africa this week that you may be interested in. The events include Seamless Africa 2019 in Cape Town, African Islamic Fintech Summit in Tunisia and Finnovation Ethiopia 2019 in Addis Ababa. You can check the full list here.

Six Nigerian firms have been licensed to enrol Nigerians in the diaspora for the National identity programme underway in the country. According to Technology Times, the firms are: Biosec Solutions Limited, CHAMS Consortium Limited, Defcon Systems Limited, National eAuthentication Limited, Thebez Global Resources and Venn Technology Limited.

Cell C’s annual Take a Girl Child to Work initiative in South Africa has introduced a digital support platform. CellCgirl is an interactive, digital and social media platform that provides 365 days of inspiration and support to girls through educational, economic and employment resources and links to bursaries and internships. It also acts as a forum for advice, CV creation and career guidance.
