Last year, Whatsapp hinted that they’ll be adding a new feature to the app. The voice calling feature.

Finally, it has arrived; though but a select few has access to it, as it’s not available yet on the Google Play and iTune stores.

The user who first reported this did so by posting his screenshots and video to Reddit (which has long since been pulled down to protect personal information). He’s also based in India, which points to the possibility that users in that region may be the early testers for the new feature.

Right now, there are two ways to get the call-enabled feature version. Via Whatsapp’s website and when someone with the update tries to call another without it. The call forces the recipient to download the new tool.

Viber and Skype already offer this service. Now WhatsApp has joined the gang. This is the latest feature that the Facebook-owned company is releasing to consolidate its growing subscriber base, over 700 million at the last estimate. A few weeks ago, the mobile messaging service launched Whatsapp Web, a service that allows users view and send WhatsApp messages right from their desktop computers.

This development, adds to other conventional calling options available to people for making voice calls on other platforms, and puts it in direct contention with Skype, the world’s most popular desktop and mobile VOIP application. Next time you want to make that voice call over the internet, there will certainly be more options open available to you.
