Twitter has created official accounts in three african countries; South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya, hinting that these countries might be the heaviest users of Twitter on the continent. Or that it might be interested in ramping up local presence.
Twitter announced the accounts – @TwitterNigeria, @TwitterSA and @TwitterKenya – in the debut tweets from the country-specific accounts on February 2nd.
As at the time of this writing, @TwitterKenya had amassed the most following at 4,932 followers, with @TwitterNigeria at a distant second with 2,748 followers and @TwitterSA in a farther third at 328 followers.
The dearth of followers on @TwitterSA might suggest a low twitter engagement in South Africa, but it’s actually quite an oddity. According to various reports – the 2013 Portland report not the least prominent, South African has the most active number of twitter users on the continent. followed by Egypt and Kenya .
Twitter did not give explicit grounds for opening these country-specific accounts, but social media analysts are speculating that the San Francisco based company might be actively contemplating business development in Nigeria and Kenya. Twitter advertising is already available in South Africa.
