This was made known by Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg at the Mobile World Congress.

In a post by Facebook, the company stated, “In countries where we’ve launched the Internet.org app, the rate of acquisition of new data customers for operators increased by at least 40%.”

Using Tigo as a case study, it was revealed that the company had realised a 50% increase in new data subscribers in Colombia while its monthly smartphone sales has grown 10 times in Tanzania since it adopted the intermet.org initiative.

The post also indicated growth in data usage on the Airtel network in Zambia, Kenya and Ghana, as a direct result of its partnership with Facebook on the internet.org initiative.

Internet.org is an initiative by Facebook aimed at providing areas with poor internet uptake, free access to specific online platforms. The initiative has already been launched in partnership with major Telcos in Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Colombia, Ghana and India.
