Since the advent of Social Media, it has become increasingly difficult to filter the overload of daily information for what really interests us. Tools and services like Twitter Lists and RSS Readers help us control this overload, albeit limited – you can only filter the sources of information. What if you also needed to filter the actual content that is being served? Enter Mentable.
Mentable is a web-based service that helps users track and aggregate news about people, events, companies, places and things of interest, using nothing but keywords. Think “Google Alerts meets RSS Reader”. With Mentable, you can track an unlimited number of interests and have them aggregated into a custom news page, saving you the stress of hunting for, and aggregating, relevant news and news sources.
According to Mentable Co-founder, Nwosu Friday, the platform doesn’t track news mindlessly, as there are some smart elements to the whole process. Say you’re tracking news about Apple (the tech company), Mentable can distinguish between “Apple” as a company – which you’re tracking – and “Apple” as a fruit, which you’re not tracking.
Friday also claims their platform also serves semantic search results. For example, if you were tracking news about the Igbinideons using the keyword “Igbinideon”, whenever there’s news about the Esama of Benin, you’ll be updated because Mentable knows that the Esama of Benin is related to Igbinideon.
