The National Transport and Safety Authority, the Kenyan equivalent of Nigeria’s FRSC have said they want to “modernise” motor vehicle registration. The current system involves many-a-file in many-a-cabinet, and many-a-logbook, and takes up to a month to complete, but the NTSA reckons that they can reduce all this tedium to a ten minute process. The entire thing will be funded by the World Bank, through the Kenya Transparency and Communication Infrastructure Project, KTCIP.
Beyond making the process easier for the citizens, the analog-digital migration they’ve proposed will help the Police, and the Judiciary have a central database of every driver’s license, car number plates and all the other data sets needed to run a government in the 21st century. Of course, none of this matters if they botch the execution, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
