MTN Nigeria has announced that they’ve begun to test their 4G LTE service through their subsidiary, Visafone.

We’ve been expecting MTN’s 4G service in Nigeria for a while now, especially since they acquired a 10-year 2.6GHz frequency spectrum band last month. But it seems we (or at least most of us) are going to wait a little bit more.

According to the press release, only Visafone subscribers on the 800 MHz band have access to this 4G LTE service test. Which is not surprising seeing as MTN’s 4G LTE is facilitated by the 800MHz frequency they secured from Visafone earlier this year.

According to Richard Iweanoge (General Manager, Consumer Marketing, MTN Nigeria), “When we roll-out fully, especially with our 2.6 GHz spectrum, the launch will help to enhance customer experience for our over 60 million subscribers, while ensuring greater coverage, access, affordability and ultimately a smart lifestyle for everyone.”

So yeah, hang in there, everybody.
