South Africa Reserve Bank (SARB) is looking to develop a central bank digital rand for the country. The central bank has issued a document calling on prospective solution providers to contact the body in relation to a feasibility study it launched in 2016. The study will seek to validate technical solutions with the development of the digital currency and also highlight participation channels with other financial industry players. According to SARB, the conclusion of the feasibility project will either result in the launch of a digital currency issued by the bank itself at one-to-one parity with the rand or enable it provide regulatory frameworks around the central digital currency.

What started out as a Russian social network comprising a group of indignant taxi riders that culminated in a ride hailing app present in more than 200 cities has launched in South Africa. inDriver says it already has 3,000 registered drivers in Johannesburg and following its success there and in Tanzania, hopes to expand across more African cities. Unlike other ride hailing services, inDriver allows riders set their desired fare price and drivers can either accept, haggle or decline a ride depending on the fares set by the rider.

Motorcycle taxi-hailing company, GoKada, has launched a rapid response service, G-Medic. The service will provide first aid treatment to accident victims before they are transferred to health care centers for full medical attention. Rapid response in Lagos in the event of an accident is still problematic especially with the almost constant gridlock traffic situation around the state. GoKada clocked 2 earlier this year and launched a training school for riders with plans to train a first batch of 500 starting April. The company says it now completes about 5,000 rides in Lagos daily.

Facebook says it detected election interfering activities from dozens of accounts which they have traced to be originating from an Israeli entity, Archimedes Group. The activities were targeted at primarily West African countries including Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, and Niger. The social media company has since shut down 65 Facebook accounts, 161 pages, 23 groups, and 12 events. It’s also banned Archimedes Group and all of its subsidiaries, who advertise themselves as social media marketing consultants relating to elections.

Kenyan startup Fundis, has raised an undisclosed amount of seed funding from the Kenya-based Kuria Capital, through the Kuria Innovation Fund. Fundis connects users with the informal service sector and plans to scale its business operations in Nairobi with the investment.

Liquid Telecom Kenya has launched a Microsoft Cloud service in East Africa. The new Azure Stack service, hosted in private cloud nodes in Kenya and Tanzania, will allow companies to run a private Microsoft cloud within East Africa, rather than at one of Microsoft’s 54 public data centres located outside the region. The service will not only improve data transmission times for these businesses but also a secure transmission framework for the region’s most sensitive databases.
