South African insurtech startup, JaSure, has secured an undisclosed amount of funding from prominent insurance firm Santam. Santam now doubles as investor as well as underwriter for the startup’s product offering. Founded in 2017, the platform allows users insure technology gadgets as well as bicycles and other sports gear, photography equipment, eyewear, camping gear and musical instruments for accidental damage, loss, and theft worldwide. The funding will go towards developing the technology and product and recruiting personnel.

Fun fact: The company officially has no CEO and says it operates a flat structure where job titles mean nothing.

As China and the rest of the countries affected by the deadly COVID-19 continue to find ways to contain the spread and fatalities resulting from the virus, a new report is highlighting some technology that could go into demand in the wake of the pandemic. According to TrendForce, the availability of smartphones, LEDs, Notebooks, LCD monitors and LCD TVs may experience great challenges especially given that Wuhan, the originating site of the virus, is a very important manufacturing location in China.

An Abuja-based mobile health startup, Soso Care has launched to provide low-cost healthcare insurance to uninsured individuals who cannot afford to pay for it. Soso Care agents collect these recyclables for sale to recycling companies which in turn generate funds to finance insurance plans. The self-funded company is looking for investment to help it scale, but has already piloted across four cities on the back of some grants funding.

Coinbase has reportedly become the first “pure-play crypto company to be approved as a Visa principal member“. The partnership will make it easier for customers to spend their cryptocurrency in the real world just as they would do for traditional currency. Coinbase’s partnership with Visa which began in 2019 saw the release of the Coinbase Debit Card which has reached 29 markets and supports 10 cryptocurrencies. Under the new partnership, Coinbase will offer additional features for existing members and help expand its reach to more markets.

Pan African technology innovation hub, Co-Creation Hub has, in partnership with the British Council and Beatfreeks Collective, launched the New Narratives programme. The pilot is an initiative to encourage diverse and expanded narratives about the African continent within the context of its relationship with the United Kingdom. 40 digitally savvy young professionals from both places will work together to develop prototypes to address this challenge between February and April.

Google has created a US$1 million pan-African fund to support innovative ideas around privacy, trust and safety for families online across sub-Saharan Africa in line with World Safer Internet Day. The company has also launched a child online safety programme, Be Internet Awesome, to teach kids important skills for surfing the internet, responding to online scams and cyber bullying, disclosing their information and what to do when they come across questionable content online. The program has been launched in South Africa, the Netherlands and Nigeria. The US$1 million fund will be administered by a third-party partner on behalf of Google.
