From his extensive work in the UK to his invaluable contributions in mentoring Africa’s next generation of data experts, Dr. Adekunle’s journey exemplifies innovation and leadership in data analytics. His impact reaches beyond numbers and statistics; it’s about fostering a future where data shapes smarter, more sustainable societies.

Dr. Adekunle was interviewed by TechCabal where he shared his journey and vision for the future of data analytics.

Dr. Adekunle’s work as a data analyst at Vortex is a testament to his commitment to using data for positive change. As a key player in the VTX Air Team, he focused on tackling urban pollution. This groundbreaking project, designed to monitor and reduce air pollution, uses street-level data to provide real-time insights. Dr. Adekunle’s role in this initiative was pivotal, delivering data-driven evaluations and analyses that informed recommendations on interventions like Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, School Streets, Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ), and speed limits. These measures, aimed at improving air quality, showcase Dr. Adekunle’s vision for a cleaner, healthier urban environment.

“My work with VTX Air was about more than just technology. It was a chance to use data to address one of the most pressing issues of our time, air quality and public health,” he shares. His analysis and insights have helped reshape policies, showcasing the powerful role of data in environmental sustainability.

Currently a data engineer at Creditsafe, Dr. Adekunle continues to push boundaries. His work here has focused on refining scorecard models, essential for risk assessment and credit evaluations. Collaborating with other experts, he pioneered rigorous Data Build Tools (DBT) procedures on these models, greatly enhancing accuracy.

“Data isn’t just about gathering information; it’s about refining it to make precise, reliable predictions,” Dr. Adekunle explains. “In the finance sector, precision is paramount, and it’s exciting to bring innovative approaches to strengthen our tools.”

His contributions extend beyond the workplace. He is passionate about nurturing the next generation of data analytics professionals, especially across Africa. Through his role as Head of Data Analytics at Alpha Training Lab, Dr. Adekunle has been instrumental in developing digital skills among thousands. His leadership in organising and executing technology seminars has fostered a thriving community of over 2,000 aspiring data experts.

Reflecting on his mentorship, Dr. Adekunle says, “Mentoring is about more than just teaching skills. It’s about inspiring confidence, showing people the immense possibilities in data, and preparing them for a world where data-driven decision-making is key.”

As a mentor at Tech ‘N’ Transit, Dr. Adekunle’s commitment shines through in the tailored courses and curricula he designed. Recognising that technical skills alone aren’t enough, he strategically incorporated employability-focused modules, including CV writing, networking, and job market navigation. This approach led to a 30% increase in course completion rates and bolstered participant satisfaction, demonstrating the impact of his comprehensive and accessible teaching methods.

Dr. Adekunle believes data analytics will be increasingly integrated into every aspect of business, with companies relying on it to drive decisions, optimise processes, and predict trends. “Data analytics will move beyond being a support function to becoming central to strategy and decision-making across industries. The key lies in making data insights more accessible to everyone, not just data specialists,” he says.

Moreover, Dr. Adekunle sees immense potential for data analytics in addressing social and environmental challenges. “Data has the power to inform public policy and improve quality of life, as I saw with the VTX Air project. The future of data analytics is not just in business intelligence but in social responsibility,” he shares.

Dr. Adekunle’s journey is far from over. His ongoing work in data engineering and his dedication to mentorship continue to create waves across the industry. Through his mentorship, young Africans are entering the global data workforce with confidence, prepared to contribute meaningfully to the data sector and beyond.

For him, success in data analytics is not only about achieving technical milestones. It’s about fostering a culture of continuous learning, ethical data use, and giving back. His journey is an inspiring reminder that the true value of data lies in the hands of those who know how to wield it for good.

“Data is the future,” he concludes. “And I’m proud to be a part of shaping that future, especially in a way that empowers others.”
